Floyd Collins Echoes Again at Playwrights Horizons, Jan. 23-26

By Kenneth Jones
January 23, 2003

Members of the original Off-Broadway cast of Floyd Collins reunite and are joined by special guests for concert-reunion performances at the new Playwrights Horizons complex Jan. 23-26.

Tina Landau and Adam Guettel's folky musical about a Kentucky spelunker who got trapped in a cave in 1925 and prompted a media circus was first staged by PH in 1996. A cast album followed, as did regional productions. The new staging is the Mainstage theatre of the new two-venue building at 416 W. 42nd St. in Manhattan.

For the new concerts, special guests Terrence Mann (as Lee Collins), Romain Frugé (who plays Floyd), John Christopher Jones (as H.T. Carmichael), Jeffrey Kuhn (Reporter/Con Man), Michael Seelbach (Cliff Roney/Reporter) and M.L. Wooley (Ed Bishop) join original cast members Stephen Lee Anderson (Bee Doyle), Matthew Bennett (Dr. Hazlett), Jason Danieley (Homer Collins), Jesse Lenat (Jewel Estes), Theresa McCarthy (Nellie Collins), Martin Moran (Skeets Miller) and Cass Morgan (Miss Jane).

Floyd Collins premiered at Playwrights Horizons on March 3, 1996, with book by Tina Landau, music and lyrics by Adam Guettel and additional lyrics by Landau, who also directed (and directs this concert version).

It won the 1996 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Musical.

The score is preserved on a cast album. Guettel is the grandson of composer Richard Rodgers, and the son of Mary Rodgers. Landau made her Broadway directing debut with the recent revival of Bells Are Ringing, but is better known for her downtown and regional writing directing projects, Space, Dream True, 1969, Stonewall and States of Independence.

PH began this January concert series inaugurating the new building with Falsettos (Jan. 9-12) and continued with Violet (Jan. 16-19) in the 198-seat Mainstage theatre, and will offer Christopher Durang's Laughing Wild in the 96-seat Peter Jay Sharp Theater (Jan. 30-Feb. 1).

The playing schedule for Floyd Collins is 8 PM Thursday-Friday, 2 & 8 PM Saturday and 2 & 7 Sunday.

There are only scattered tickets available for the performances. The Jan. 26 evening performance is a benefit hosted by the creative team, followed by receptions with the cast and company.

For tickets, call Ticket Central at (212) 279-4200, go in person to Ticket Central at 410 West 42nd Street (noon to 8 PM), or purchase tickets online at the Playwrights Horizons website at

The series of inaugural performances have been made possible by a generous grant from The Estate of Edith K. Ehrman.
